HINTS ON USING THE FORUM

The FIRN Forum is divided into individual Fora (or Forums if you prefer), each of these having Topics that are created by users. Other users can Reply to Topics. A Topic and its associated Replies is a Thread.

To create a new topic

Click on the Forum in which you wish to place the Topic. You will see a [New Topic] button on the right hand side of the screen.

Click this button and a new screen will open. You type the subject of your new Topic in the ‘Subject’ text box. Remember that only the first few characters of the subject will be visible in the Main Index, so try to get the key word in those first few characters.

You can then type your message in the text box. Add URL’s and pictures using the relevant buttons above the text box. Add other file attachments using the Options below the text box.

You can preview your post before clicking on [Post Thread] to place your new Topic in the Forum.

Accessing threads

The main index shows the main Fora headings (e.g. General, Research, Teaching, Law, FIRN). Also in the Main Index view you will see the number of Posts (threads) and the number of Replies. The most recent Post or Reply, and the user, is on the extreme left.

Clicking the ‘Latest Post’ box will take you to the relevant Thread.

Clicking the Forum Heading will take you to a screen that will show all of the Topic Headings within that Forum. You can access any Thread by then clicking on the Thread Heading.
