The Forensic Institute was founded in 1999 as an international network of experts providing professional forensic services to the legal profession, in addition to providing a significant academic resource.
In 2007 The Forensic Institute moved to our new premises in Baltic Chambers, Glasgow and created our core team of four top-class scientists. Our aim continues to be the provision of the highest quality scientific and medical services and training relevant to civil or criminal justice. We are committed to the development and improvement of professional standards in every aspect of the use of science and medicine in the law.
Challenging seemingly 'orthodox' views, which turn out to be only a very local view, and promoting the presentation of correctly weighted and diligently researched evidence, has been a hallmark of our work. We have provided significant evidence in support of, for example;
-
full disclosure to enable proper consideration of expert opinion
-
challenges to the presentation of DNA evidence when no statistics are available to assist the Court - in all of those cases the evidence has been ruled inadmissible
-
Non Accidental Head Injury - which has contributed to Not Guilty verdicts in all of the cases in which we have been involved
-
the limitations of DNA profiles which are mixtures or emanate from very small amounts of material
-
the difficulties of opining on how DNA came to be where is is found
- drugs on money
The Director of The Institute is Professor Allan Jamieson who, as well as extensive casework experience, is well known for his entertaining and informative lectures across the UK.
Our extensive expertise is drawn from across the world and includes public and private forensic science laboratories, individuals, and academic establishments. Quite simply, the Institute uses the world’s leading experts to provide one of the most comprehensive and high quality sources of forensic scientific and managerial expertise anywhere.
